Burraco

The Italian rummy card game, against the computer or at a table with friends on their own phones.

Open projectView source

Burraco is a rummy from Italy, played with two decks and four jokers. You lay down sets and runs, build burracos of seven cards or more, pick up your side’s pozzetto of extra cards when you run out, and close the hand once you have a burraco.

  • A foyer lists the open tables live. Start a table, pick the variant (two players, or four in pairs; one hand or play to 1005, 1505 or 2005; any burraco or a clean one to close), and anyone in the foyer can sit down, or send the link to friends.
  • Play the computer: three levels of computer players, who can also fill empty seats at a table.
  • Your own name and animal avatar, and a rank that climbs with every win, shown as a medal badge from wood to diamond.
  • Sound, vibration, little reactions, and a notification on your phone when it’s your turn and you’re away.
  • Reconnects on its own after a dropped network or a phone that slept. If you’re gone too long on your turn, the computer plays for you until you’re back.

Every table runs in a Cloudflare Durable Object, which deals, keeps the hands secret and checks each move with the same rules code the page uses. The computer players were tuned by letting them play hundreds of games against each other. Notifications are sent with Web Push, encrypted and signed in the Worker with nothing but WebCrypto.
